Maximize Your Benefits. Optimize Your Life.

August 14, 2026

The Better Veteran subscriber count is now 5,300 strong, and almost a third of you joined in the last two months alone. Nearly every one of you found me through a single tool. Maybe the retirement calculator from a Facebook post, or the salary translator a buddy sent you.

So this week, no new tool. No fire drill either: nothing broke, nothing is expiring, and there's no deadline anywhere in this email. Instead I want to hand you a fully updated toolbox going into the weekend. Three things: the 19 tools you might not know exist, the week I spent making sure every number in them is current, and the assistant that ties it all together.

Every number, re-checked

Here's the thing about benefit calculators: the math doesn't break, the world changes underneath it. A state legislature meets, OPM publishes a table, and a tool that was right in March is quietly wrong by August. Most sites never go back.

I just finished going back through everything, checking each figure against the government source it came from (and my sanity breaking is evidence of that). A few of the things I caught:

  • Vermont, Maine, and Utah don't tax military retirement pay, and one of my tools thought they did. For a typical E-7 pension that error was worth $1,500 to $2,500 a year in taxes that don't exist.

  • The 2026 federal pay raise came in at 1.0% with locality rates frozen. Almost everyone projected 2%. My GS tables now match OPM to the dollar, all 15 grades.

  • Placement fell at 26 of 27 top MBA programs in the Class of 2025 employment reports. The MBA tool now shows the real numbers, not last year's.

  • 2026 Medicare, TRICARE Reserve Select, and ACA figures all moved. All current now, including the roughly 26% ACA jump after the enhanced credits expired.

  • And one of mine: my MBA tool was understating enlisted pay at the 4 and 6 year marks because two columns got shifted. E-5 at four years is $3,947 a month, not $3,776. Found it, fixed it same day. You should expect that standard from anyone whose numbers you trust.

One of the things that the full data audit found. Fixed and live now.

Same tools, better experience

While I was in there, I rebuilt how the tools feel to use, because accurate and overwhelming is still overwhelming.

Every tool now opens with a short guided walkthrough that shows you what to enter and why it matters, in about 60 seconds. Required fields are marked, so no more guessing why the button won't give you results. Answers lead with the verdict instead of burying it, the dense reference material folds away until you want it, and the whole thing works properly on your phone.

If you tried one of the tools months ago and bounced, it's worth another look. Same math, much shorter path to your answer.

Every tool now has a walkthrough to guide you through step by step and how to read the information that it’s providing. No more walls of text.

The one thing I want you to actually do this weekend

Go to tools.thebetterveteran.com and ask the Benefits Assistant a real question.

It's the chat box on the main Toolbox page, and it is not a generic chatbot. It runs on a knowledge base built from the actual regulations and rates: 38 CFR ratings math, the 2026 GI Bill cap of $30,908.34, priority groups and copay exemptions, CRDP and CRSC, the TSP conversion rules that changed in January, state-by-state pension taxes. The same audited numbers the tools run on.

Ask it what you'd ask a benefits counselor if you had one on call:

  • "I'm 70% and my knee is getting worse. What should I be looking at?"

  • "I have 14 years in and a civilian offer. What am I weighing?"

  • "I'm 100% P&T. What am I not using?"

It gives you a straight answer, then points you to the exact tool that runs your personal numbers. Two minutes of asking can surface a benefit worth thousands a year that you didn't know you had. That's the entire reason this project exists: you earned these benefits, and the system doesn't hand them to you. You have to go get them.

Go get them.

The AI chat bot is context aware on everything VA Benefits related. All of the rules, regulations, and authorizations that I use in the specific tools, it knows. It will pull from all of the appropriate documents to give you federal and state level benefit knowledge. This is better than using regular LLMs because it’s already trained on everything benefits related and pulls from solid data sources, not Reddit.

Which of the 20 did you not know existed? Hit reply and tell me. I read every one.

Stay informed. Stay empowered. -- The Better Veteran

Every number above traces to a primary source: the Federal Register, OPM pay tables, DFAS pay charts, state revenue departments, CMS, KFF, and the schools' own employment reports. These tools are educational planning aids, not legal, tax, or financial advice. If you ever find a number that doesn't check out, reply to this email. One reader already caught a TSP rule change before I did, and the fix was live the same week.
